The other lead from the other single-phase transformers is connected to the line conductors. WYE transformers are named so because the electrical drawing looks like a Y. Understanding a WYE TransformerIn a three phase system, the voltage between any two wires will always give the same amount of voltage. However, the voltage between any one of the phase conductors, and the neutral will be less than the power conductors. In a three phase, 208 V transformer, the voltage between the power conductor of any of the two phases, the voltage from any of the phase conductors to ground will be 102v. In a WYE transformer, the voltage between any two power conductors will always be 1.732 times the voltage between the neutral and any one of the power conductors. The phase-to-ground voltage can be determined by dividing the phase-to-phase voltage also by 1.732. Applications for WYE TransformersIn a WYE Transformer, one of the most popular uses are medium-size commercial building. It is a dual-voltage, three phase service that delivers four wires to the building. These WYE transformers are three 120-V windings that are 120 degrees apart. They consist of three hot wires and a neutral or ground. The secondary winding of a WYE transformer is center tapped and grounded. This makes it perfectly symmetrical to all three phases of its power. There is no wild leg in the WYE configuration, as there is in the Delta transformer's center-tapped secondary. Advantages of a WYE Transformer ConnectionsThe main advantage of a WYE transformer is that it meets the needs for 120-V single-phase, 208-V single phase, and 208-V three phase power in a building. Other popular voltages used in a WYE transformer is 480 V single-phase, 480 V three-phase, and 277 V single-phase. In WYE transformers, there is no wild leg to burn out low-voltage, single-phase equipment. The single-phase loads can be connected to any winding of the WYE, this allows maximum use of all three conductors of the WYE to be utilized. The neutral or ground is brought out from the middle point of the WYE connections to be distributed evenly across the three phase. Since the neutral wire is connected to the center of the secondary the WYE is perfectly symmetrical. This means the power loads of the building can be balanced very easily. A WYE transformer is often used to efficiency increase output voltage. Because a line-to-line voltage encompasses two phases with 120-degree angle between them, and the line losses are reduced because the higher voltage allows for lower amperage.
